#HumansOfClutch: Dave

Though we here at Clutch Studios are pro at market content creation and distribution, many of us have passions and hobbies outside of the office as well. In honor of National Hobby Month this January, let’s take a look at what some of us do when we aren’t at 1021 W Adams. First up is Dave, Business Development extraordinaire by day, drummer by night.

In eighth grade, when a friend came to Dave witha receipt for a brand new guitar, the two decided they wanted to start a band. “Six months later, my parents bought me a drum set and we started making noise in their basement,” he says. As a youngster, he developed his skills by listening to classic rock drummers such as Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham and the Who’s Keith Moon. Today he continues to pick up tips and tricks from all sorts of artists, from the nuanced playing of Al Jackson, house drummer of Stax Records to the combined manic pounding of Hot Snakes’ dual drummers Jason Kourkounis and Mario Rubalcaba.

Dave says he enjoys most the camaraderie that comes with playing in a band: “I like just hanging out and making music with my friends.” And though he may have once had rockstar aspirations as a kid, today, he enjoys the creative process more than any potential fame: “When I play now there is less pressure and it is more fun.”

Currently Dave plays in two bands: Witchfeet, an indie-rock outfit pulling inspiration from 90’s bands Guided By Voices, Archers of Loaf, and Super Chunk as well as an unnamed project with a Ramones vibe.

If you’re looking into learning to play, Dave says, “Buy some used drums and just start playing. It doesn’t matter if you’re any good if you’re having fun!”
